Empire State College: State University of New York

NORTHEAST CENTER (NEC)

Welcome to the NEC NonTraditional Students Week Events site

National Non-Traditional Students Week is celebrated the first week of November each year and is promoted by the Association for Non-Traditional Students in Higher Education (ANTSHE).  It is an opportunity for colleges across the country to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments, challenges and successes of non-traditional students.

Our mission at SUNY Empire State College is to serve adult non-traditional students through an approach to learning that values the vast range of life experiences and real-world knowledge our students bring to their college experience.  We also provide our students with flexibility and choice in their educational experiences since we are well aware that our students lead complicated lives that necessitate them simultaneously juggling multiple personal and professional responsibilities as they endeavor to earn their degrees

The Northeast Center of SUNY Empire State College is taking two weeks this year to celebrate and recognize our students through multiple opportunities for them to interact, socialize, and engage in activities that feed the mind, spirit and body.

In 2008, the Art Show & Coffee House was the first event of the week. Word & Image was a celebration of our students' artistic and writing achievements. Some of these creative works were an outcome of their course work and others were the result of their own creative endeavours.  Over 50 students, staff, family and friends attended the event, and had a wonderful time.  See our video from last year's Art/Coffee House on YouTube.

We look forward to sharing and celebrating more of our students work on Tuesday, November 10, 2009.
